The Lying Game (#1)
Hardcover: 320 pages
Published: Dec 7, 2010
Amazon Summary:
I had a life anyone would kill for.
Then someone did.
The worst part of being dead is that there’s nothing left to live for. No more kisses. No more secrets. No more gossip. It’s enough to kill a girl all over again. But I’m about to get something no one else does—an encore performance, thanks to Emma, the long-lost twin sister I never even got to meet.
Now Emma’s desperate to know what happened to me. And the only way to figure it out is to be me—to slip into my old life and piece it all together. But can she laugh at inside jokes with my best friends? Convince my boyfriend she’s the girl he fell in love with? Pretend to be a happy, carefree daughter when she hugs my parents good night? And can she keep up the charade, even after she realizes my murderer is watching her every move?
From Sara Shepard, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Pretty Little Liars books, comes a riveting new series about secrets, lies, and killer consequences.
Let the lying game begin.
My thoughts:
When Emma's slimy foster brother shows her an online snuff video of someone that looks just like her, Emma (of course) wants to find out who exactly this girl is. She turns to Facebook and finds out that she has a long-lost twin sister, Sutton. She arranges to meet with her twin, but when she arrives Sutton is nowhere to be found. She accidentally passes herself off as Sutton to her friends and family through a series of mishaps . She wants to tell them the truth, but receives a threatening note that tells her to keep on pretending that she is Sutton or else she'll be next to disappear.
The Lying Game kept me up reading til 4:30 am. That's saying alot when my one year old wakes up at 8am! We've got mystery meets high school with a little romance thrown in! I was racing to get to the end! Emma is a very likable character, while Sutton takes awhile to grow on you. I was put off by the way Sutton behaved. She was pretty much a B*tch (for lack of a better word). But, I did end up feeling sorry for her.

One of the things that bothered me, I didn't understand the narration in the book. The voices were very unclear. Who was narrating? Sutton? Emma? I felt a little lost. Sutton is narrating but somehow knows Emma's thoughts and feelings, but can't remember hardly anything from her own life. How does that work? While it may not have made the most literary sense, it did keep things interesting. I enjoyed being able to hear BOTH of the characters perspectives.
I was on the edge of my seat (well figuratively, since I was lying in bed) reading this. I just wanted to find out WHO DID IT? Sadly, I really didn't like the ending! I was expecting at least some resolution. It left me hanging and not in a good way....
Nevertheless...Will I be picking up book #2 ? Most definitely! I'm hooked! (Another series TBR, I know!!)

Judge a Book By It's Cover: The cover is cute, but makes much more sense now that I've read the book! I adore the pink swirly font they used! I'm a sucker for the swirly fonts!
Who will like this: Pretty Little Liars fans. If you want a fluffy yet suspenseful read mixed with a teeny bit of teenage romance, this is for you!

Great review! I've heard awesome things about this book and your review doesn't disappoint! I understand what your saying in regards to confusing narrations (it often times happens to me. I find myself going back to the beginning of the chapter to remind myself who's mind i'm in now) but im sure the book was a good read overall!

ReplyDeleteI enjoyed this one too. I read it in one sitting!
ReplyDeleteWas a huge fan of Pretty Little Liars so really looked forward to this one. It was fun and suspenseful and mysterious, if a little confusing. I had the same issue with narration - who is saying what, who can see what... how on earth do I describe this so it makes sense?? Thoroughly enjoyed it though and so did my teen!
ReplyDeleteI've heard some great things about this book, but your review makes me feel a little more cautious!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely loved this book! I can't wait until the next one comes out. Like you, I couldn't tear myself away.
