GoodReads Summary:
"New York City has been decimated by war and plague, and most of civilization has migrated to underground enclaves, where life expectancy is no more than the early 20's. When Deuce turns 15, she takes on her role as a Huntress, and is paired with Fade, a teenage Hunter who lived Topside as a young boy. When she and Fade discover that the neighboring enclave has been decimated by the tunnel monsters—or Freaks—who seem to be growing more organized, the elders refuse to listen to warnings. And when Deuce and Fade are exiled from the enclave, the girl born in darkness must survive in daylight, in the ruins of a city whose population has dwindled to a few dangerous gangs. As the two are guided by Fade’s long-ago memories, they face dangers, and feelings, unlike any they’ve ever known."
My thoughts:
I'm going to start off my review by saying, I'm smitten with Fade. OK, moving on.

This book is gritty, feral and wow...just amazing. The first half of the book centers around life in the tunnels. There are freaks prowling around in the tunnels, overtaking other settlements. Freaks are like some zombie/animal/weirdo hybrid that I can't figure out. If you're bitten by a freak you don't turn into one, like zombies....but still...they're ferocious, savage and want to eat you.
Deuce is such an admirable heroine. She is just so incredibly....RAW. She will no doubt be compared to Katniss of The Hunger Games. I actually enjoyed Deuce MORE than Katniss. I was able to identify with her more, even though I am in NO WAY a strong huntress like Deuce is. I loved seeing Deuce at her more vulnerable moments. She was equally brave and yet somehow soft and emotional.
I loved that throughout the book the characters would find little "treasures" from the previous life; A tin of cherries, a wedding invitation, a track jacket - just completely random things that the characters had no idea about. I loved reading about the characters discovering everything. Like a child seeing everything new for the first time, Ann Aguirre did a great job with her descriptions.
I thought we would make it through the book without a love triangle. ALMOST. There is a slight love triangle, but I am Team Fade 1000% percent. I loved the ending of the book. It was a great resolution to their current plight, but opened up a whole new realm of possibility for the second book. I cannot wait for the second book in the Razorland series!
Judge a Book By It's Cover: This cover is STRONG and reminds me of a TV show. It's not flashy or incredibly eye-catching, but it is fitting with the warrior spirit of the book.
4 Stars!
