With titles to her credit like Autobiography of a Fat Bride, We Thought You Would Be Prettier, and The Idiot Girls' Action-Adventure Club, it should not surprise us that Laurie Notaro would find ever-new ways to take embarrassment to dizzying new levels. It Looks Different on the Model, her first collection in four years, shows that freak-magnet fame has not armored this veteran humor columnist with self-assurance. The book's revelations include a butter-laden feast for vegan children; a post-office scandal; and apocalyptic email messages from her mother. One paperback original you won't regret.
My thoughts:
Her honesty is so refreshing. In a world where everyone tries to make themselves appear perfect, Laurie Notaro lets us all get a real look at her life - the good, the hairy, the smelly and the funny. Her writing is filled with snark and self-loathing.
My favorite essays had to be her showdown with a size medium shirt in the dressing room and the Ambien shopping . Hilarious! Hearing about how she managed to land herself on the "UNINVITED" list for the neighborhood Christmas party was pretty funny too. Some of the essays weren't as funny (the dog story? Post Office? what?), but overall the book was still good.
Just looked over on Amazon, and this book has (22) 5-star reviews and only (2) 2-star reviews. So obviously a lot of people loved it. I enjoyed Autobiography of a Fat Bride and We Thought You Would Be Prettier much better. If you're going to pick up any Laurie Notaro, I would suggest reading those first!
I also ran across THIS while checking out the book on Amazon. YES! An interview between my absolute favorite author, Jen Lancaster, and Laurie Notaro! Seriously go read it now! Hilarious!
Judge a Book By It's Cover: Don't really like this cover. It's not very eye-catching. The colors are boring.
4 Stars!

I have been looking for some new humorists to read and this sounds really good. Will definitely look for the next time I go to the library.
ReplyDeleteAnd I know how you feel about reviewing essay books. I reviewed one a few weeks ago and felt like my review made no sense because some of the essays are funny and others are not-so-funny.
Stopping by from Cym's Book Review Party.
